Could you use hardware store sand for a fish tank

I was watch youtube videos saying they used hardware store sand when setting up there fish tanks is this really safe for the fish
 
It's perfectly fine. For saltwater tanks I always go fir the real stuff but I've setup a bunch of freshwater tanks with substrates from hardware store gravel. Sand is even better.
 
Just check what its made of. Silica sand is nonreactive while a carbonate-based sand will raise your ph (unless you want to do this).
 
I use pool filter sand. Easy clean and it's $5.22/ 50 lbs so my tanks are full
