So just got 65gal for free and it came with a load of crushed coral for substrate. Is this safe to use for fw? I hear its typically used as a pH buffer. And my tap water is already pretty good for Cichlids.

i dont like it. I prefer sand, and if you have cichlids that like to dig, they will too. Its all personal choice really, but imo sand is a much better choice

I personally like CC. With the flow you need in a tank you don't have to worry about your substrate moving around on you and it helps keep your PH stable. With sand any sort of water movement towards the bottom of your tank will move and shift your stand. However it is a personal choice and I think every tank is, and should be, different to match your style and what works for you. Good luck with your endeavors.
