I am going to try distilled water. I dont have the money right now for a r/o unit. Is distilled water the same as r/o water? OR is it better/worse? The reason why is the algae I have to scrub every week and nitrates 20-40ppm. Do I have to add any additives to the water other than the salt?

just buy Distilled water in 5 gal bottles from a look "pure water" store or the like. Runs about $5 for 10 gallons. it has worked great for me.

Distilled water is more pure than RO. Some claim RO is better because some of the minerals that get through are better for reef tanks, ymmv.

I'm planning on doing a reef tank. Currently I have 2 damsels, some base rock and coral skeletons. I'm going to ad more base rock, seed it with some live rock, and go for a fish and live rock only (FOWLR) tank in the near future. Currently the tank has been running for 2.5 months.
