The usually knowledgable person at Petsmart recommended a female betta for my sons 10 gallon, so he has more choices about what to add to the tank (within appropriate bounds of course).

But aqua advisor has a warning that females are aggressive and I've noticed she was really going after the little pond snails I put in for cleaning. She quit, but still I wonder. The hope was to put a few Otos and a school of neons in there.

My male betta is with neons and dwarf frogs and he doesn't even notice them never had a female tho

Female betas are not as aggressive as males but will fight to establish who the leader would be. Temperment varies by fish.
