I am looking to upgrade my filtration system on my 38 gallon tank. I am looking very seriously at the fluval 406 cannister. I was wondering what the ones who have used it think about it. I don't intend to buy another for awhile so want to make sure I make the right choice.

I don't got the 406 but I do have the 306 and its great. Virtually silent, you really gotta listen for it if you want to hear it. One thing I did learn though is cut off the slack on your hoses when you set it up.

Take a look at the Rena XP series canister filters. I have several of them. They are great filters, and completely silent.

About 5 months, foam it came with in the bottom tray, bio balls and ceramic rings in the middle tray, and ammo chips in one half of top tray, algone packet and more bio rings in the other. You get another tray with the 406, I'd put polishing pads in it.
