i have a 30 gallon FW tank, with a ex70 HOB Filter submesable heater. I went to wrong was a did a cycle with fish, lol. It was set uo january 3 and fish in 48 hours. My reading for a while where (PH) 7.4 (AM) 8 ppm down Now after many WC here: DATE OF TEST 2/14/11 (PH) 7.3 (AM) .25 (NI).25 (NA) 0. SO am I headed in the correct direction ? How long before cycle completes But still no NS.

Unfortunately lots of PWCs are part of cycling with fish.

You're definitely on the right path. Five weeks is a little long to start seeing nitrites, but if your ammonia was truly at 8ppm, you probably stalled the cycle. I'd hazard a guess that you've still got a couple weeks to go. Try adding a piece of media from an established tank if you can. It'll help speed things along.
