Heater Question

Im currently a week into fishless cycling a new 29G tank. The heater I have doesn't have temperature markings on it so through trial and error i got it set to 84 for the cycle. It stayed at 84 all week until today when i was putting some plants in i noticed it was really warm, like hot tub warm. I checked the temp and it was 99! The only thing I can think of is I put in an ornament with an airstone next to the heater about 3 inches away and the bubbles would get right next to the heater. I did that on saturday. Could that be what thru it off?

I think your heater is shot. I'd fork out the cash for a new one. They are cheap. And having that issue when you have fish in will result in a lot of dead fish.

Its brand new! It came with the tank

Still sounds defective. Things are broken all right out of the box all the time from the manufacturer. Something may of happened during shipping.
