Hi wondering if anyone can help. I have just acquired an old 43gal 5ft octagonal tower. It has a base of about 6 inches deep and a built in gravel filter.
My question may be silly but firstly can I just ignore under gravel filter and use external one and secondly with regards to this I would really prefer sand base for bottom feeders, but as the tanks base has holes for gravel filter is it ok to build up layers of larger gravel then pea gravel before putting sand on top? Have seen lots of talk of sand just mixing with gravel. Also it would mean a thick 6inch base is this ok to do or what problems would this cause?
