Setting up a new aquarium in Singapore. Decided to give freshwater a try. I brought a 4X2X2 display tank and a 4X2X2 to build a sump. Wanted bigger but apartment size cant really go any bigger. May convert to a reef later so setting up so easy change over. Question is i want to drill the bottom for drains and build a weir in each corner. I have 2 Eheim pumps. 1 1262 and 1 1260. Can anybody tell me what size drains to drill.

Welcome to AA! First of all is the tank Glass or Acrylic? If the tank is glass you will need to find out if the bottom glass is temp. If it is you can't drill it or it will brake. If it's not you can as well with acrylic. What you'll need is to find the bulkhead fitting size that you want to go with and go of that.

Not a expert but if I gave wrong info omeone with more knowlegde will correct me.

Thanks for the reply. The tank is all glass as is the sump. I have been informed that there is a recommended drain size for certain flow rates. I have to try to match the drain size to my pump flow so all i need to know is what is the size of drain required. I have 2 6X6 weirs so the linear is 24 inches. The bottom of the tank is just ordinary glass.

Can I ask why you're wanting to use a sump on a FW system? It's not really necessary.

You may have alresdy seen from previous post that i am building a system that i can easily change over to a reef system at a later date. Incooperating a sump now will make the trasistion easier at a later date. Also i have kept heavily stocked and voracious feeding fish such as Piranha before and with a sump my turnover and water volume can be increased therefore increasing filter efficiency. Please tell me if this is incorrect. Also when i purchased the tank, the second tank (proposed sump) came free and at the moment it is cluttering up my roof terrace. I really want to utilise this in my system as i can see it being benificial to the well being of any fish i may wish to keep. Also it can be utilised for plant growth.
