Hello I can get a great deal on live rock from a private seller. Wondering if there is anything special I should be looking for?

You don't want a lot of algae on it. Hair or bubble algae for sure. Make sure you don't see any undesirable hitchhikers.

Another thing is to find out if he ever used copper in that tank, this would be your biggest concern buying second hand rock . if he did it would be rendered useless for a reef , as coral and inverts will not do well with any traces of copper leeching out of the rock,
