As I'm trying to replicate a design, I really only want to use the plants it lists. I suppose then I'll find whichever substrate my LFS carries and use that.

I've used eco-complete and floramax and you can't really go wrong with either. I typically do a 50/50 mix of one of those and the petco "sand" substrate.

A plant starter pack would be the way I would go. This gives you a nice variety let's you learn what plants do well in your system and which ones don't do so well.

Only issue there.. the petco sand will eventually fall down as the larger substrate works upwards. I've had success using the flourite black with petco black sand. For corys the Eco complete should be perfect, if you're wanting a super high tech proper than ada aqua soil capped with Eco should be the move..

I haven't had any problem with the separation in any of my tanks thankfully. I never had good luck with flourite, floramax and eco-complete always better results in my systems.

Just be prepared to use alternatives in case the primary plants are not available.
I cannot recall if dry ferts were mentioned in this thread so far. Just something to consider with that much light.

Here's the plant list for those interested

PlantsRotala green, Rotala indica, Eleocharis minima, Marsilea hirsuta, Glossostigma elatinoides, Callitriche sp, Starogyne sp, Limnophila Vietnam, Flame moss, Hygrophila Pinnatifida, Phoenix Moss, Nambei Moss
I was thinking that I'll switch out nambei moss for something more common and then do all my mosses and rotala, maybe the hygro for the first round of growing in until I get co2
I'm just taking all wood and everything out of the tank and stuffing it with plants until I get co2

With the exception of the Callitriche sp. (I've never heard of it before that I'm aware of, maybe it has a common name) I know that those are pretty common plants and shouldn't be to hard to find.

I would second Fresh2o's comment about the dry ferts, those would be good to look into now that way it's not an unexpected expense down the road.

I wouldn't even cap the aqua soil. There's no need

Well i will be able to comment further once ive got my tank going

It is designed to be used on its own with no cap. Im sure sand and other specialised planted substrates will kick up just as easy

Absolutely, if I hit the flourite black sand full blast it would be chaos! You keep talking about this tank of yours... we ever going to see it?! That wood still floating;)

Headed to LFS today! Yay! Planning on picking up a male GBR, more rummynose tetras, some plants and such and substrate, maybe stones and hopefully a finnex planted plus if they have any! (Sometimes they do have them for $90)

Pretty cool if the LFS stocks those fixtures. Otherwise, Amazon / AquaVibrant is a good source.
IMO I would hold off on the fish and work on the hardscape and layout first. Then plants. You can always add fish later. I hate moving things around in the tank with fish in the tank. That includes adding substrate. My $0.02.

My rescape- this is how I entertain myself, is that bad? :)

Just found out that at 18" high a finnex planted plus will give me low to medium light

I'm not paying $225 for low-end high light honestly
