Milky filter

So I haven't had my aquarium for long(a little over 2 weeks) and today when I was doing a water change I noticed some weird looking milk substance from the black sponge in the filter. Is this normal/ or safe? If not is there anything I can do?

Doesn't look like anything. It might just be protein scum which doesn't really affect the tank. Does it have a oceany smell? If so it is probably protein scum.

Thanks that makes sense. It as a weird smell but it's definitely not the smell of fish waste.
