How thick is the slate you intend to project with? If you wanted real thin, I would try a piece of roof slate, lay it between two boards and with a hammer you can chip it to whatever sizes and shapes you need. The lady across the street from us made 18" pillers for in her aquarium this way. Each piece stacked and glued. Gave her tank an ancient bottom of the ocean ruin look.

I used 3" pvc pipe for my cave. I toke a jigsaw and cut a slit end to end down one side. Then I toke a heat gun that you can get at any major hardware store and heated up the opposite side of the pipe while slowly pulling apart at the slit. Pvc can be shaped in all sorts of ways with a heat gun. I even drupped the ends down so it wouldn't look so rounded still.
