I have a planted 55g tank. i am currently use a marineland HOT mag. pro. I've cleaned it many many times and it works for a few hours then stops pumping.

I am going to get a new filter and try to get that up to speed while still fighting with the old one so i don't majorly cycle.

any recommendations?

I purchased a XP2 for my planted 55g 3 months ago and couldn't be happier.

The spray bar that came with it (after drilling more holes in it) is what I use.

that looks good. what media are you using? I read some place that carbon isn't good for a planted tank...

sponges, and either ceramic bio rings, bio stars, or some sort of coarse media that gives lots of surface area.

many times, you can pickup a new rena filstar with all the media inside as an added bonus.
sometimes though, you can only find the normal box, but it should still ahve filter sponges in it...you'd just need a bag of rings/stars.

It came with coarse and fine sponges and a bag of carbon

I got a bag of ceramic rings, and filter floss to put in mine (in place of the carbon)
