New to the fish world

Hi everyone. My name is Sarah. I recently acquired a 20 gallon freshwater tank with a black convict cichlid that is about a year old. The following day, we went to a local pet store and spoke with an associate about getting a tank mate. We now have an orange South American cichlid in the same tank and they seem to get along just fine. Does anyone have any tips/advice/warnings for me? I have never owned a fish before and have no idea what I'm doing.
