Are high nitrates really bad for your corals, and if so what will they do to them,will they burn coral

Depends how high they are. They are usually bad for everything in you're aquarium. A low 0-15 nitrates is fine. 20 is good, 30 is worse, 40 is bad,50+ will kill you're fish and you're coral might get damaged.
