I have a Young tiger oscar ... 125gal tank plenty of hiding places .. I've been told I can put fire mouths in same tank ... Is that true and if so what other sort of "tank mates " can I put in with him...

125gal Oscar , 56gal African Cichlids , 10gal ???

It's typically not a good idea to mix Central and South American cichlids. Personally I'd just add a 2nd oscar color morph and call it a day.

Thanx for the input .. That was my original idea but some "expert" told me to do firemouths ... Was a little iffy on her "expertise" after she told me I could put the oscar and African cichlids together ...

That "expert" is no expert then! Feel free to run any stocking questions by me first ;)

Unless that oscar is 10"+ and you've vented it there's no way to tell visually.

No he is probably a good 4-5 inches now .. I thought I read somewhere that if they had darker circles near their dorsal fin they were males ... Could of been mixing it up with another one I've read a lot in last few days trying to find out what I actually wanted lol ... I've had my Africans for probably 4 years now .. Wanted to try a different fish so read up on a lot of different ones .. Picked an Tiger Oscar ... That's main reason I got the 125 gal ... Was reading about their high levels ... So I wanted to be safe .. But anyway thax again for the quick replies..

No way to sex them at that size sorry, you'll have to wait awhile longer.

Also Central American cichlids is where it's at ;)

Yea wife wants to do a 75 gal .. " for her" lol Might do something along those lines ... Unless she wants to go salt

While small, adding something else might not be a problem, once they get larger, it will become his tank only. Sometimes even two oscars might not work so keep an eye them.

Ok , imma hold off on 2nd fish for that tank then ... Probably going to buy a 75 gal but that's going to be salt more than likely.. Thanks for all the rply to my question ..

Definately wouldn't mix Africans with American, but unless you are setting up a proper biotope tank with all the right water parameters, plants, dithers and catfish of a particular region i don't see any reason why you shouldn't mix centrals with south american if they are appropriate in behaviour and are none specialist (i.e. Discus). I think its a bit restrictive otherwise which for most people is not what the hobby is all about. I think its down to personal taste really, lets face it most cichlids from those regions are tank bred and not very fussy. I have a mixture of central and south in my 130G with a neutral Ph and they're a bit feisty with each other but are in great condition, all better than when i originally bought them as they are well cared for.
My collection includes a 8.5" Red Oscar and a 5" Firemouth.

If I don't move the oscar to the 75 gal , I'm probably going to do 2 oscars in the 125 , what ever tank the oscar doesn't go in will be the Central American cichlid tank ...

125gal Oscar , 56gal African Cichlids , 10gal ???, soon to buy and set up 75gal Central American Cichlid tank

I think you would be better keeping 1 Oscar and having him in the 75 and using the 125 for some centrals, some of those fancy Thorichthys from the other thread would be a good place to start :)

Why ever not ? Booze and Hookers are a perfectly acceptable expense as far as i'm concerned. Anything else is just wasting it.
