Planted Tank?

It's been about two years since I last kept an Aquarium and I'm looking to get back into it. I was just thinking about getting a five or ten gallon tank with just plants for a while, and then adding some cherry shrimp, and eventually a betta longer down the road. I just wanted some tips, especially with tank cycling.
