Kam does the UPC #'s you gave include the ones before the scanning bars?

The UPC code is just the #'s that were part of the bars (under).

To scan the UPC you need 12 digits.

I'll look again. Might post a pic if needed.

You need the leading and trailing numbers that are not under the bar.

One more thing. I read a thread on a local/regional forum at ReefCentral where several people are removing their DSB. They claim their corals look healthier (my words not theirs). I am not looking to debate the topic but would like the experts here to provide some info as to why or why not this is a good idea. Everything I read says DSB's are good as long as you have a good clean up crew and good flow.

The purpose of my sand hunt was for a DSB for my new 120 that I will be setting up in a couple months. My current tank has a cc bed.

DSB are good and bad....If you dont have any cleanup crews that are mixing the sand and cleaning it......it can become a time bomb. Waste and debris will build up in the sandbed. If its not cleaned or mixed it could possibly release all the toxins, and debris into the tank causing havoc. If you keep it mixed up it will be beneficial to you adding oxygen and filtration. I have about 3 inches in my 125gal and im happy with that much i dont think i would go any deeper on my tank. JME

Sorry if I sound ignorant, but what is this vinegar and sand thing? And what road was that K-mart on, I can check my local one, but if they don't have it I am not too far from Grand Island. I could stop on my way to the casino!!

The vinegar test means that the sand is argonite (calcium carbonate based). It reacts with the sand to release CO2 (bubbles).

The K-Mart is on Military Road in Niagara Falls, by Porter.

Kam I would like to know what kind of vinegar you are using because I have already tested the sand you say fizzed and foamed 3 weeks earlier and got nothing. I even went back to the HD and walmart today and took apple cider vinegar and white distilled vinegar to cover my bases and tested them again. The only results I got were people looking at me like I was crazy so I added to it by swirling it around in the cup a little and then looked at my wife while everyone was looking and said " well honey you are pregnant"

I used generic white vinegar. I added the sand to a cup (a small hand full) and then poured the vinegar in. Reaction was almost instant.

I also tried the garden basic sand from walmart today I was so exicited and then
I got no repsponse.
home depot has some fantasy sand I guess I'll try it next.

Brenden I live in Monroe and I checked the Garden Basics sand I found at Wal-Mart in Lancaster, SC. I didn't get any bubbles. So I guess its the wrong stuff too.

I found the garden basics at Walmart today, my question is can I just dump it in with my existing sand?

As of this week I may have a pallet of the good stuff on the way. I did not want a pallet but that is what they required to order it and I figured my tank is big enough that would eventually use it.. When/if I get it you are welcome to some at cost.

I would check it before I used it. Kam is the only one that got a "fizz" from it.

Those of you without the "fizz". Have you read the packaging to see if perhaps some other company is producing this sand for Walmart and selling as Garden Basics??

The garden basic sand I bought at walmart says packaged for walmart by Old Castle stone products. I have 15 bags of it if you would like some?

Some people wash it to get the small particles out so it will not cloud your water.
and
Some claim the smaller particles are more beneficial for the bacteria than the large particles.
I guess it is personal preference.
If it is a new tank that is cycling I would dump it in otherwise I would wash it a little to eliminate some of the cloudiness.
