Our 10 year old Jack Dempsey has had popeye in 1 eye for the past 3 months, possibly due to injury. It grew slowly at first and we made the mistake of not treating it early. We started treating when it was maybe 3-4x the size of normal and we did the full gamut over the course of a month, using trial and error to see what worked (fungal cure, epsom salt, kanaplex, metroplex and water tank changes). What helped the eye subside the most was kanaplex but the eye still maintained its cloudiness plateaued at 1.5x the size of normal. It stayed like that and seemed ok. We stopped dosing meds but kept up with the epsom salt and consistent water changes. The tank is balanced and doesn't show abnormal levels of anything except the water is a little hard.
We went away for vacation for a week and when we came back, unfortunately his eye is acting up again and it's now grown a bit again (2x normal size) and now there's white lumps forming on the eye. One has ruptured and the open sore has closed but the lump is still there, and it looks like 2 others may rupture as well. We don't know if dosing more kanaplex would help at this point. Any suggestions on what can be done? Would consulting a vet help?
He is still eating but he mostly hangs out at the top of the tank near the heater all the time and we feel really bad that we don't know how to help.
