Want to switch my substrate to sand and have at least 2 inches of sand. I've read about dead spots and really don't want to mess with them. Is there any sort of snail or critter I can keep in my tank that will stir the sand around so I don't have to?

You dont really have to worry about that in freshwater. You can rubberband a fork or toothpick to the end of your gravel vacuum and stir it up a little before you vacuum every now and then

Malaysian trumpet snails do a good job of stirring sand.

I usually just "stir" it with my hands during every water change. 10 months and no dead spots.

Basically, mix it like you would mix cookie dough.
