Redoing 55 gal. Tank

I would just like some suggestions on what substrate I should use. Sand or gravel. Also I would like some suggestions on some fish that you guys think are pretty cool. Thanks for your time!!

Is look into some lake victoria african Cichlids personally. For the substrate I'd go with sand because its more natural for most fish and looks it aswell. Plus imo gravel gets so dirty underneath and in between where with sand it just lays on top.
