When I first set up my reef aquarium nearly a year ago, the guy at my local fish store suggested a 50/50 mix of live sand and crushed coral. We haven't really done much with the tank in the way of adding new life since then. So basically, you could say my tank has had about a year of 'getting right'! My question is, while doing research on brain coral, the sites I've visited suggest putting it on the sand bed for the best results. Is my mixture bottom okay for something like that. Also, fish like the checkerboard wrasse bury itself in the sand while it sleeps. Is it okay as well or is a strictly sand bottom the optimal overall option? Thanks

Both should be OK for your brain coral. Sand is better as the CC will trap waste and food causing high nitrates and causing your algea to get out of control. Just dont put your brain coral on any rock as this will cause issues.
