I have a 10 gal. sitting empty, and I am thinking of setting it up for a dwarf puffer or 2...
I am thinking of trying sand as the substrate, any suggestions.
or just using the new undergravel filter I found on clearance and using something else as substrate
I have never used and undergravel filter setup, any comments?

Toss the undergravel filter. Get a power filter. I recommend the Hagen AquaClear 20 or 30.

You might want to stick with the 20 if you go with sand.

for sand cheapest is Pool filter sand available at any pool supply place

alot of people do not like underground filters, personally i still have s4 tanks that have underground filters and have been running fine for over 3 yrs, its a personal choice when it comes to filters...
if you decide to use the underground do not use sand as a substrate.....

well they can do an awesome job if properly maintianed and cleaned regularly. thats the reason most peoples undergravel filters fail they don't take the time to keep them maintained and cleaned
