I have 400+ on my 10 gal reef. Live sand isn't always needed.

You don't even need sand at all if you don't want it.

I just sucked all my sand out. Makes it way easier, especially since I am a noob. Looks good even if you just put enough to kinda powder the bottom. Easy to find all the sludge after a catastrophe.
