I recently received java fern that claimed "guaranteed snail and pest free". It is the only new plant in the tank and now I have a plethora of tiny snails. They seem to grow quickly and are multiplying like crazy! I really don't mind them but what are they? Just a pond snail? We started out with 3 and went away for 5 days and had a friend come feed the fish. Now we have 13 snails at the least!ImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1402550701.594561.jpgImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1402550741.116632.jpgImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1402550781.192270.jpgImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1402550959.191869.jpgImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1402551050.409816.jpg

Yep. Looks like pond snails. I had a few pop up after getting some plants as well. Your friend probably over fed the tank while you were away, allowing them to reproduce more. Luckily they aren't really a problem and will help eat algae and dead plant matter. If their population gets out of control you can get an assassin snail to eat some or put in a piece of lettuce or some kind of veggie overnight. It should be covered in snails by morning and then you can just remove them.
