So whats the deal with Tufa or Tuffa rock

I was checking out the bins of rocks at my local Big Als and there was a sign that said Tufa / Tuffa rock is only for reef and Cichlid tanks. Why is this?

What it is, is calcite (in essence) and this will add to pH and hardness in your tanks. This is ideal for marine tanks as well as african cichlids.

I suppose that is why my GH strip reading is like 300 pph after mixing tap with distilled for so long. My PH seems about neutral though. I have 2 in my 29 gallon non cichlid tank. I didn't know what they were before I bought them heh
