I have a planted aquarium with just some normal sand I got from petsmart. What is a good substrate to use for growing plants? Or a good mixture? My plants are doing fine but I would like for them to thrive

For most plants, the substrate isn't what really matters. Its the nutrients, co2 and lighting that really matter. While it is possible for your plants to get nutrients from some subtrates, these nutrients can also be added through fertilizer dosing.

Many forum members here have normal, inert sand in their tanks and their plants are doing great.

Ok. Is there any natural way of getting the nutrients in the water or is it just with liquid fertilizers or other kinds and water changes?
