Would I be able to do Eco-complete on the bottom and then add black sand on top? I want to get Malaysian Trumpet Snails to keep the sand clean and I will try my best to control their population. Or is there any other sand cleaning fish or invert that would do the job that doesn't reproduce so quickly?

Sand will fall through the coarser substrate. I used flourite black sand with a petco black sand cap.. works well. .i employ mts to turn the sand and corys to kick up crap and such for the filters to grab it..

I don't over feed and once in a while I'll take the ones at the top breeding in the morning and sacrifice them to the planted tank gods.. or feed my assassins;)

How do you prepare fluorite black sand? Can you tell me the step by step of using that with the petco black sand cap, and when to insert the plants?
