Sump sections

What is the point of spliting a sump into sections with the glass pans so the water will pour over it, I assume it has to do something with making sure the sump dosen't overflow but that dosen't make since to me.
 
Well many sumps have different designs for different purposes. One reason to have a chamber for the live rock is so evaporation only takes place in the return section and not leaving the rock exposed. Makes it easier to keep snails/hermits in the rock side of the sump and keep any rocks / sand from getting into the return pump.
 
it's to keep a steady water level in some of the compartments, and also to stop bubbles from returning to the display, along with keeping sand and macroalgae(if there is a refugium implemented) from spreading out to the return pump.
