Aquarium Advice FINatic
Well just today I discovered that one of my Red Wag Swordtail females is actually a male!! When I bought "her" she was larger than the common slender types I see in pet stores. There was no gonopodium nor does he have a elongated fin.
Now today I've been observing him displaying and squaring off with the lone male platy I own. I thought it was odd until I started looking at him a little closer. His gonopodium is now more clearly defined and it looks like his sword is starting to bud.
I did a little searching on the web and I saw an article saying that some male swordtails develop late as a strategy to avoid the notice of other male swordtails until they are larger and stronger. Has anybody else experienced this or has any knowledge? It sounds very plausible.
Anyways I'm not disappointed and I can't wait until he develops a long sword!!
