Hello, a friend of mine asked me to come over and take a look at his tank and I was astonished. He has this dark green sludge all over his tank. I got most of it off with an algae sponge, because I thought it was algae, but I am having second thought. two days later it is back with a vengeance. It is really thick and bubbly, could it be some kind of bacteria, and if so what should he do.

Does he have live plants? Does he have a heater? If he doesn't have plants and DOES have a heater, I would suggest he turn the overhead light off for several days until the sludge clears off. Do a 50% water change to rid the spores... and definitely keep the tank from all sunlight.
