Well I'm at work and it was in one of the gas fireplaces as a packing piece, so naturally I dismantled the whole thing to get something I could possibly use in my tanks..

Are you sure you want to risk it? There's no way to know what's in the foam or what it has been exposed to sitting around. Unless I know something is stated as aquarium safe, I'm always suspicious. I have too much money and labor in my fish to risk saving a couple of bucks. If you're sure the foam is uncontaminated you could hold it under a running faucet to see if water will pass through it well enough to use in a filter. But it's your call buddy. OS.
