Hey all! Very new to the site, this is my first post.

I am planning to get a 55 gallon aquarium in the near future. These are the fish I want to get for it:

Australian Rainbow Fish
ONE Rainbow Shark
Any kind of Gourami

1. Would do they all get along with each other?
2. Do they all tolerate salt? (one tablespoon per five gallons of water)
3. How many of each can be kept of each fish in a 55 gallon tank?
4. Is there any alternatives for tankmates of these species?

Please feel free to share your question, comments, or criticisms for this post.

im not sure about the shark but the gourami and rainbows should be fine.
why are you wanting to add salt to the aquarium?

most rainbows need a group of 5 or more as well and i would only have 1 gourami, they are usually mean to other gouramis

The stocking looks fine, figure you'll need 4-5 Rainbows as they are schooling fish. Even in a 55gal, more than one Gourami is iffy .. they can be aggressive towards each other .. IMO it's hit or miss. You could look at a couple of Dwarf Gourami's like the flame or powder blue ... their colors are much more vibrant.

For the Rainbow shark ... make sure you set up plenty of territories for it to claim with DW, Rocks, Cave and plants.

Consider a School of 5 - 7 TigerBarbs. They'll add color and energy and will be compatible with your choices. They won't bother the Rainbows or shark and Gourami's are tough enough to stand up to TB's.

BTW ... you could skip salt. Most members only use it when treating an illness. Proper PWC's, New stock Acclimating and Quarantining are good ways to prevent Ich.
