My 46 gallon goldfish tank is having serious issues for the past few days. I had a ph swing overnight 3 nights ago but it has since been stabilized, it went from 7.4 to 6. I lost a black moor from that (at least I think it was that that caused his death, he was dead when I turned the lights on). The next day I lost another one, with no warning or odd behavior. So I did a 50% water change and checked my parameters. Don't remember what they were now, but nothing was out of the ordinary, ammonia, nitrates/nitrites were at 0, ph was back to 7.4 like usual. Last night I checked my parameters again before bed and all was well, but I did a 10% change just to be safe. This morning when I turned my lights on my oranda was laying at the bottom kind of sideways looking sad. Checked my parameters, everything was the same as it was the last 2 times (ammonia/nitrates/nitrites 0, ph 7.4). So I did another 10% water change. Went to work and came home and now he is at the top swimming (see pictures), so again I checked my levels and everything was the same. After the first one died I started feeding sweet peas 1x/day and a little garlic in case it was bloat. Any ideas what I could have going on, or possible ways to fix it??? I'm thinking about tearing the tank apart this weekend and putting half new substrate in (maybe half sand/half the existing gravel) in case it's something going on in the gravel... If I do that will it cause my tank to cycle or mini cycle?
Here's my fine details:
46 gallon bowfront, now stocked with 2 fancy goldfish (did have 4 but 2 died)
Filters- aqueon 50 and fluval c4, fully cycled and running since January, fluval added in march.
Water treated with prime at water changes.
Ph- 7.4
Ammonia/nitrate/nitrite- 0
Temp- 70-72
Feeding them sweet peas and garlic currently, but normally they eat omega 1 flakes with peas 1-2x/week and garlic 1x/week.
I think that's everything.
