New to plants and was wondering if I can just stick a pair of scissors in the water. I was thinking of using a new pair of those nail trimming scissors. Just wasn't sure about the metal in the water.

That should present no problem at all. I have used regular ol' scissors for trimming plants for years and years in my planted tanks.

Yep I have regular sissor too. I have long handled pruning sissor too due to having a deep tank but you don't have to spend money on special sissors. I just make sure to dry mine well after using and I leave them open so the blades get thoroughly dry.
