I have a 150 reef tank that is very mature. I've been thinking of setting up a 55 fish only tank. Can I take 25 or so gallons from the larger tank when i do a water change to help cycle the new tank?

Sure, but it is not likely that it will accelerate the cycle much, the numbers of nitrifying bacteria in the water column are very small. The bacteria colonize surfaces, you would do more to add a couple cups of substrate.
