So in the area where I live the unsoftened water from the tap has pH 8.3 and is extremely hard (haven't gotten it tested for the exact # but it leaves deposits on everything). For the past couple of years ive used the unmodified water and the fish have done fine, but it's destroyed all my equipment. I've been getting extreme calcium buildups in the filters to the point that they stop working. The only way I've found to fix this is with CLR (but I don't want to add the soap to the tank) or replacing the motors every couple months, which I dont have the money for. So I've been thinking about putting half and half water from the softener, and from the well. Right now all I have is a betta, would it hurt him to have extra sodium in the tank?

i use well water through the softener without any issues

Same, my fish do not have any problems with well water through a softener.
