What does coraline do?

What does Coraline algea actually do for my system? What benefits does it have for inhabitants fish/invert/corals
And what negative effects does it have on the system

It doesn't really do anything other than turn stuff pink and or purple. Many argue that it's a sign of a tank whose water is chemically good for corals. The only negative effects I can think of is that it will encrust on your pumps and glass and can be a pain to clean off and the fact it is extracting calcium from the water and is therefore in some competition with stony corals and clams for the resource. However, the negatives IMO are minimal.
