What type and gender of fish is this?

I adopted this little guy when he was a fry in a petco tank. I felt bad cause he was in a tank with gold fish? As it's growing I'm realizing it maybe a male Platy but I'm not sure ?

How long does it take for their sword to come in .. I thought he was almost full grown..

It's a male, and it looks like a sunset platy.

It could also be a platy, but the body looks a bit long for a platy. I agree it is male. It looks rather small in your pictures since it looks roughly the same size as a guppy in there. Sword tails can get 4 inches, like a molly. I still vote swordtail, and the sword won't come in until it bigger. But, another thing is that most swords in the hobby tend to be sword/platy crosses. This makes identification a bit sketchier. Either way, it is a lovely male livebearer.
 
It is a sunset variatus platy a different species to 'regular' platys.

Variatus platys are longer in the body than other species.

Yes, yours is a male - you can see the gonopodium, which they use to mate the females.
