I've been leaving the white LEDs on the 10 gallon on for about 12-14 hours a day. Recently I've been seeing brown algae spots on the glass. The nitrates are low and I do 35-50% WC's every week. I'm thinking about leaving the blue "moonlight" LEDs on when I'm at work so the fish have some kind of light in the evenings(I work 2nd shift). And just turning the white lights on for about 2 hours a day when I'm home from work. Will this help?

Any light that is strong enough may promote algae if left on too long.
Perhaps you can put it on a timer, skip the blue lights, and set it for 6 PM - 2 AM (+/- an hour or two).

Also could be naturally occurring diatoms egged on by the blues.

I have seemed to get more scummy brownish and green tint build up when leaving on the blues overnight originally on purpose, and then later just by forgetting to turn them off over night sometimes.
