Hello everyone. Just getting back into the hobby. Recently got, what I think is a 150gal tank according to my calculations, (72inL by 18inW by 25inH) from a friend for a great price. I'm going to be starting off with angelfish, corys, rainbows, catfish, and gourami. I'm thinking I'm going to do sand substrate, probably pool filter sand. I have a Marineland Emperor 400, Aqueon 75, and will be getting an API Filstar XP XL canister. I have one 300W heater for the time being.

I will be adding water and ammonia to start my nitrogen cycle on Friday, due to my work schedule this week. So excited cant wait!!!

Here it is for now, didn't have much time to do anything with it last night.

Let me know what you guys think!! So excited!!

Should be a fun build! May want to consider adding a background on the tank now while you can still move it.

Yea I have to do a few things yet before I add water. Including that. Also need to fix the base board on the left side.

Anyone have any input on the filtration/water flow?

Also should I add the salt right away like when I start my cycle with ammonia?

Salt and corys are a no no! They hate it! Salt is mainly beneficial to live bearers. I wouldn't worry about the salt at all! Other wise tank looks good which colour background you going for??? And what scape ideas do you have eg. Planted tank natural fake bog wood sand/gravel etc. preparation is key to having a tank with no regrets when you look through the glass! I'm following :)

I would love to do a planted tank, but not sure if I really have the right lighting. Saw an awesome tank at That Pet/Fish Place that had Lilly Pads and a bunch of other stuff with their angels. Looked awesome!!! Wanted to do some driftwood, sand substrate (using pool filter sand #20 silica). And for background probably just black to be honest. Unless I find something else that catches my eye.

Shame would love to see it a planted tank and watch the progress. Black backgrounds are the way forward!!! Sounds all gravey to me!

I'm fairly certain that the aquarium salt is beneficial to all species. It offers vitamins and nutrients not found in most tap water. Many live bearers like mollies can actually handle low doses of marine salt (slightly brackish to full brackish, about .05 I think) because they are brackish in the wild. Also, my mollies have bred more rapidly in brackish vs straight fresh.

Up and running. Pulled an all nighter after working 1pm yesterday til 1am today. Bought the sand this morning. Rinsed it and filled the tank up. Just about crystal clear. A lot of condensation on the tank yet. Water is prrrreeeetttty cold. Just for the hell of it I tested my water pH is about 6.4, ammonia is .25 (had some left over water in the tank and gravel, used media filters), nitrites well they are a big fat 0 test is crystal clear, and lastly nitrates about 8ppm. I don't know why that is with the nitrates, not sure if that's normal or not.

Guess I should add ammonia up to 4ppm correct?

Like I said they are mostly beneficial to live bearers hence your Molly being a love bearer likes it! Molly's can tollerate high levels of salt and are used frequently to cycle salt water tanks! Corys on the other hand hate the salt as it is not naturally in there environment! There are no records of corys breeding in an aquarium with salt added at all, does this not tell you that it is not beneficial to them??? The only time salt would be viable to use in a tank with corys is if you wanted to stop them from breeding and I'm guessing this person who started the thread doesn't want to do that??? I could be wrong :)

Did you so the test rite because the nitites should never be clear!!!!!!!! Check the expiration date, and make sure you shake the trAtes 2 bottle for a long time

Good cuzz 0 equals that really light blue if it come back clear again. Take it back, and tell them that the nitrites does not function
