Interesting, I did not know that.

What about water parameters? I'm guessing in order to stock this tank with shrimp I'm going to have to stay on top of my readings, right? BTW - I have yet to test the water in this tank

You could always do scuds or fairy shrimp - both would go good in there as well, and neither would require a heated tank.

I think I saw scuds for sale on that website I recommend to you. How big do they and fairy shrimp get, and what is their diet?

Yep, that site has one variety of them - there are several species. Scuds, depending on species get between 1/4 and 1/2", while most fairy shrimp I've seen get up to about 3/8".

Those are good sizes for this tank. I think anything over 1", might be too much.

This is so cool. You should get a big magnifying glass to be able to better appreciate whatever you stock this with!

Question Theresa, one of my concerns with keeping shrimp in this tank is the lack of a heater. I've never checked the temp in this tank and don't know how or if the temp fluctuates. How would this affect the shrimp?

My main 4 shrimp tanks are all nanos and unheated, no problems at all!

Dwarf amber barb, full size smaller than neo shrimp. I ordered a trio to keep in the Project Tank but my very small A. australe female made a meal out of one. Quickly rescued the other two who are happily living in the scarlet badis tank (another unheated nano).

Wow...see I was told and read that you needed a heater for most ornamental shrimp, except for Caridina multidentata/japonica, since they are so hearty.

What about breeding though, do you ever heat your water to encourage breeding? I also read that for RCS, for example, breeding temp is 72-73 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sorry, but the link didn't work :( now worries though I found them on Barbus gracilis- “Dwarf Amber Barb” | Invertebrates by Msjinkzd

Those are some seriously cool microfish! How are yours? Are they high maintenance?

I got mine from her earlier this week. No problems at all with the, except trying to get a good picture! I currently have them with my RCS and badis, sponge filter, no heater. Badis will eventually move to the Spec 5 so I'll probably add more.

Or Boraras micros, even smaller! I know Wet Spot Tropicals has them in stock

Update: 4/1 - Day 24

Hey guys!

Can't believe my last update was on 3/16... I recently joined a local planted aquarium club here in NJ and they have a forum as well, so I'm finding it challenging to manage two forum accounts. I'll get the hang of it eventually. Anyway, the pico cube is still going strong.

Since the last update I've:
- Trimmed the Glossostigma elatinoides and replanted the healthy trimmings
- Topped off the water (I neglected to perform the weekly 20% WC on Sunday)
- Shortened the photoperiod by 1hr (from 3.5hrs to 2.5hrs)
- Moved the lamp 1" closer to tank
- Added two small (1/8th inch) pieces of Fontinalis antipyretica to the driftwood
- Added a small cluster of Salvinia minima (I went to Fishtown in Ramsey on Monday for the first time and couldn't resist myself

)
- Added 1 hitchhiking Snail (have no ID yet)
- Added 1 hitchhiking Amphipod

Here are some pictures I took yesterday:

Looks really good! Looks a lot bigger than it actually is! Have you'd elided on stock yet? You could do a couple shrimp, but I doubt you could fit the dwarf barbs without water problems. Love it so far!

Thanks Nils!

So far it's stocked with:
Copepods
1 Amphipod
1 Snail

I'm still debating whether or not to add a shrimp. I went to a new LFS (well new to me) on Monday and the shop owner/manager is into pico tanks. He had a few on display, which were pretty neat. I told him about my pico cube and showed him a picture. He said I'd be able to keep a shrimp in there, no problem. He went on to say that he's done it before in a similar setup. So we'll see.

I would add a really small shrimp, and then it could kind of "grow out" in that tank and then you could add it to another tank, and do the same thing! I don't know much about these small tanks, but it could be doable.

Nils

What a great project and tank! Thanks for sharing and looking forward to following the progress!
