Did the CSL lighting upgrade last night. Not too bad though it took me a lot longer than I had imagined, probably due to my inexperience.
I did the two CSL 32 watt retofit into the Nano-Cube light canopy. Fitment wasn't bad although the connector makes it a very tight fit. I'll probably cut these connectors off in the future & just go with pin connectors as in the original configuration.
The CSL reflector needs to be cut about .75" & bent straight on one edge. I used the old screw mounts for the old bulb holders to mark, drill & mount the 1st reflector. After a test fit, you need to attach the CSL bulb holders, straighten the inner edge flat & cut 2 small slits on the sides for tabs in the canopy before mounting the reflector.
Then I used the old ballast mount for the 2nd reflector. All this needed was the removal of the old light switch, bend the opposite side of the reflector edge straight so that it overlaps the 1st reflector, mark, drill, place bulb holders on & mount the 2nd reflector.
After this is done, test fit the acrylic spash guard. You'll see that you now need to slightly bend the angled edges in the front & back a little more to clear the rounded screw guide of the acrylic guard.
Now you can wire up the ballast. I soldered the wires & used heat shrink tubing. I did not use the provided light switch because my lights are on timers & I did not want to drill a hole on each side of the canopy to accommodate the switches. If you do not intend to use the switch, then you need to connect the black & white wires together to complete the circuit.
You'll notice the 32 watt bulbs are the same length as the stock 24 watt. The difference will be the CSL connectors that add another inch even after you bend the wire portion as much as you can. One bulb was fine, the other touched the black ABS hood. This I did not like so I cut the pin connectors from the old ballast & used those for the 2nd bulb.
Make sure you plug each ballast in to check that the bulbs work before you replace the acrylic spash guard.
I have only one light on today to let the corals & clam adjust to the new lights. I have to say that even just one CSL 32 watt upgrade, you can see a noticeable difference in the amount of light.
I also added a 60mm fan. I tested it & it was nosier than I care for. I'll wait till I have both lights on to see if the temps rise enough to warrant the use of the fan.
24 hours NE, it's definitely a 60mm fan & not a 80mm. The mounts on the vent are spaced perfectly for a 60mm fan.
How did your upgrade go? I'm sure you would agree that there is a noticeable difference with even just one light. Worth the 40 clams right!
