I have kept fish in outdoor ponds before....from large ponds to smaller (20 gallon) containers. I had the best success with Tiger Barbs, Paradise Fish, Dwarf Gouramis and Bettas. All of them grew and reproduced quite nicely.

As for keeping goldfish with cichlids....this is NOT a good idea. Cichlids will generally tear goldfish up pretty badly, especially if the cichlids decide to spawn in the pond (which they likely will). Goldfish are utterly defenseless against the onslaught of a cichlid....having neither speed, agility or defensive weapons. Even back in the 'old days' of fishkeeping the goldfish specialists found that a fish like a Paradise Fish would shred the fins of their fancy goldfish...and Paradise Fish aren't as well-armed as the cichlids you have listed.

That's why the best way to get them is through a local aquarium club where you can trade fish/supplies, or get your LFS to order them. Mine will order just about anything I have asked for, as long as I give them some kind of small deposit prior. They do not charge me for shipping.

Okay, thanks guys! Just wanted to see if I could get around using another pond, which my parents will allow roughly around when hell freezes over :fadein: . oh well, thanks.

Interesting topic!! From Christmas until late April/early May --I had 4 convict cichlids & 10 'former feeder ' goldfish in a 90 gal aquarium. There were also 2 'bubble eye' fantail goldies in the aquarium. There weren't any torn fins or problems.

The goldies are outside now & the convicts have the aquarium all to themselves now.

So this fall I may be in for trouble when it is time to bring in the fish.

You can certainly ask. Petcos in my area have been willing to get a fish for me. You may have to jump through a few bureacratic hoops first, though. I had to speak to an employee and then a manager on the phone. The upside of Petco or PetsMart is that they may well have access to a wider network of importers through the other branches...

I had a particularly conscientious fish department employee at PetsMart who was in charge of ordering and she did order some bristlenoses for me - and called me when they were in so that they did not have to go into their tanks at the store. That was a while ago and since then the fish staff seem to be like the guy at the bagel shop who bags your bagels as you point to the flavor you want in your dozen!

Setting up 55 gallon cichlid tank ???

Ok getting ready to jump into a bigger tank...not me but the fish!!! I have 9 cichlids. I have 5 in a 10 gallon tank and 4 in another each have a pictus cat in with them.

What is going to be the best way for me to introduce them to each other in a new tank? By adding one by one until they get used to each other or a few at a time. I dont think that putting them in all together would be a good idea would it?

Someone also tell me what is the best to decorate their tank? Rocks....lots of plants...pots....I have alot of plants in both tanks now and I have pots and tree stump ornaments but the have no interest in the pots with holes in them and the stump is just mostly a place to swim threw...they could careless about hiding if you ask me  I just didnt know what would be the best and cheapest way to start. I was thinking of starting with what I had and as things went along to start a slow overhall of everything as I got the money.

So help me here....I'm dire need of your fishy help....as usual!LOL

I'm assuming the cichlids are the Africans mentioned in your tag line? If so, the best decorating idea I could suggest would be rocks, rocks, and more rocks.

As far as introducing them into the new tank goes, your best bet is to add them all at once. This way, each has a chance to stake out its territory. A few at a time would result in the first fish viewing the later additions as intruders and there will be much violence and mayhem to deal with.

Definitely add all the cichlids at once so territories can be established. If not, you will need to rearrange the decor every time you add a new cichlid. Do you know exactly what species of Africans you have?? If they are Mbuna from Lake Malawi, they will use rocks as they mature. If you have fish from Lake Tang, they have their own needs, but would also appreciate rocks. If you have cichlids from both lakes do not mix them.
If you don't know what you have, post pics and we can try to ID them.

Rams and Apistos

Are they safe to mix or will the territory/ brood guarding of the apistos cause trouble?

Good call, Danny! They are very closely related. I have two male rams and 4 ?? Apistos in my 50 gal community tank and they are all doing well.

Yes....the Ram used to be Apistogramma ramirezi but has been reclassified as Mikrogeophagus ramirezi. The rationale eludes me but that's the way it is. The behavior is identical....they're cichlids, albeit small ones, with cichlid manners. They'll be territorial and argumentative around spawning time. If you have a large enough aquarium and provide adequate territories with caves then you can keep a number of pairs in the aquarium successfully without too many squabbles.

I agree with everyone else's advice about introduction.

As far as decor, I went with rocks (check my gallery). Slate is usually pretty flat and easily stacked. I went to a local plant nursery that offered a "bucket o' rocks" for $25--as much rocks as I could fit into a bucket. I got some slate and other rocks to make it look more natural, but in retrospect I would advise getting the nice flat slate. It's far easier to stack, and easier to rearrange should the need arise. If you are close enough to Maryland, the place I went was either Lovell's Nursery or Snavely's Garden Corner (I always get them mixed up and it's been a while). They are both on Leitersburg Pike in Hagerstown, MD, about 5 minutes from each other. If you aren't close to either of those, just look in the yellow pages under garden centers and call around.

Good Luck!

What type of food is best for a Jewel Ciclid?

I was looking to purchase some ciclid pellets for my 3-4" jewel cichlid, but I came across a bunch of different types, and didn't know which would be best. Also, what size would be best for this size fish. I am assuming I have to stick with small or mini.

Here are the options.

Are the more expensive ones really worth the price increase?
