I wouldn't say you'll have problems but you need to pick plants and fish that prefer or tolerate hard water.

It is a sump system, in fact, 2 sumps. It's called a Tidepool 2. Two sumps connected to 1 pump.

Since your tank is already drilled you can just switch over to a sump. Basically the same system you have now. Just a few different parts.
