No clue on the nitrites. Are you sure you read all the directions? Did you rinse that test tube out really well before you tested? If nothing else, you might try a water change.
Although the rasboras you want do get a little bigger than B merah or B brigittae, it's still not a chance I would personally take.
You could add some cardinal tetras, they are nicer looking than neons anyway IMO (the red stripe extends the length of the fish's body, unlike the neon tetra where it only extends about halfway to the caudal). Espei rasboras, harlequin rasboras, or glowlight tetras are all very easy to keep and would add a nice touch of orange to your tank. Ember tetras stay very small, maxing out at around 1.25", but are larger-bodied than Boraras and are a better choice IMO for a ram tank. They always look pretty dull when I see them at pet shops but they are really great looking once you get them home and they settle down. They're pretty easy to keep as well.
You could do something like this:
2-3 Dwarf Upside Down Cat OR 2-3 pitbull pleco (these prefer to be kept in groups) OR 1 Bristlenose/Rubberlip/Clown pleco or similar
2 German Blue Rams- get a pair
6-8 Hatchet Fish
6-8 smaller tetra or rasbora, could easily add 10 if you want Ember tetras.

Second round of stocking, add the rest of them. Next thing I'd add would probably be your catfish, then the hatchets or rams.

But I am not super concerned about it today, our chicken coop caught on fire this morning, so me and my brother had to get that handled, lol. Poor chickens.
