Well dosing the main tank will help the other fish if it is septicaemia as it is contagious.

I'm off to bed now, gym in the morning :/

Glad that I could finally be of help lol :)

Thanks for the help much appreciated!

Scroll down on the page to Furan2 & it mentions combining it with 'kanaplex' which is Seachem's kanamycin brand which this company/site also sells. Click on the kanaplex which is highligthed in blue & its listed. You can use just the kanaplex or combine it with the Furan2 for a more broad spectrum treatment. You may have to order 2 things of the kanaplex because its a very small amount. Look up gel recipes for goldfish because you can combine the kanaplex & make a medicated food.

Thanks Jessica!
Too confusing for me. I will have to talk to hubby first and see if we can afford it all. :) I looked up shipping and three items is $36-37 dollars just in shipping.

Ouch on shipping! At the very least, look into getting 2 bottles of the kanaplex & compare it to the cost for the kanamycin on the other site i mentioned. I dont know if one is less expensive than the other. Its a great med to have on hand in general because it treats a broad spectrum of fish diseases (not just goldfish issues).

This thread always makes me feel good (not about your poor fish) but to know how many people really go out of their way to help someone.

I have 8 capsules of cephalexin 500mg. No idea if it's still usable. Its the same as this product.

Can I make it into a food? If its gone bad will it effect the fish or just do nothing?

Found this online.

Don't know if it's possible for you but the person said he used it for goldies :)

--Depending on what your sickness is you may vary the antibiotic, but I have had great success mixing antibiotics with cooked peas, yam meat, and an equal part cooked shrimp or salmon.

Put the whole batch including the antibiotic in the blender, or if you want after you roll the mixture into little balls, careful make a little hole to fill with antibiotic and roll it closed.

These are like moist pellets and the fishy smell is attractive to goldfish. You need to do some calculations but for human antibiotics or Maracyn the dosage is 10 mg/food ball. For Furan-2 which is what you probably need, the dosage should be 5 mg (per food ball).

Generally figure the oral dose should be 1/10 as much as you would put in 10 gallons water for a 4-5 inch fish.--

Hmm....cephalex is a good broad spectrum antibiotic but its generally considered to be more gram positive than gram negative. Septicemia is a more gram-negative infection so i am not sure how effective it will be. Unless the bottle is years old & kept in the sun/heat, it should still be safe to use. Expiration dates on antibiotics are negligible & really more to safeguard the manufactor & increase their their profits. It should be fine to use but, like i said, i am not sure how effective its going to be against this infection. We will work with what you have!

Thank you again!
I must suck at googling hahaha! I couldn't find any info on treating fish with human antibiotics just humans with fish antibiotics! Now kind of I know what kind if dosage I'm looking at if I make a gel food and mix it in.

I'm thinking an oral dose instead of a tank dose will give it more of a chance. What are you thoughts?

Oral would def be more effective than treating the water. Worth a try!!

Cool. I am going to buy some gelatin today and I've got some 'aquaculture crumble' fish food I'm going to mix with some vege to make a gel food. Can you recommend any ingredients that will make it enticing? I might buy some canned salmon....

Try making a batch or 2 of the food 1st to see how to mix it before you make a batch with the meds. No sense in wasting them! Canned salmon may be a good choice-i would try feeding a few bits of it first to see if they are interested! Canned tuna or shrimp may work too if they dont care for the salmon (but they should like it!). Supposively, garlic is 'enticing' but i have never tried feeding it before!
