Hi everyone!

I am getting ready to set up a planted tank with a betta and want to get a snail tank mate for him. I was wondering which snails would be a good match? I know every betta is different. What would some suggestions be on introducing the two? Also how would I manage not having an infestation of snails? I only plan on getting one snail and quarantining it, but I was wondering if there are any other methods or suggestions? I've never had a snail before and don't want my tank to be taken over!

Thanks so much!

The main thing with snails is to ensure you don't over feed. If you have too many there is too much food in the tank.

I'm not a snail "expert" but I'd stay.away from mystery snails as they pop a lot which is okay if you like water changes. Perhaps ramshorn or Malaysian trumpet snails.

What do you know about Apple Snails or Nerite snails?

Also do you think one snail should do fine with a betta?

Apple = Mystery. :)

Nerites I'm not super familiar with either! I'm sorry I couldn't be more help! I imagine thr snail would be fine because of the shell.

Do u have plants? I have a Colombian snail and he destroies my plants

Oh thank you! I didn't know they were the same lol :)

Thanks for the info!! Any info or suggestions are always welcome! I've recently got into aquarium keeping and have never ever had snails before so I am a complete beginner.

Yes I do in my goldfish tank but nothing set up yet for the betta tank. I was planning on some java fern and anubias and some other plants not sure yet. I'm new to live plants so any suggestions are welcome!

Yay! Welcome! I love this hobby. Keep in mind that often the "ideal" situation may have an exception that works! As long as you have a backup plan don't be afraid to try different things.

I would also like to mention that occasionally live plants will have a hitchhiker snail as well!

Oh yes I have heard about hitchhiker snails or eggs. So I don't buy them from a running tank. Just the live plants started but in the plastic containers :) I've also seen some pretty good YouTube videos on quarantine and sterilizing plants before introducing them to your tank.

Thanks for the info!

No hijack at all! All the info I can get on snails is welcomed! :) hope your able to figure out your snail problem!

Actually I would recommend you getting a Mystery Snail. All snail populations are quite easy to control. Just don't overfeed and your snails won't overpopulate. Plus, Mystery Snails climb your tank wall just above the waterline to lay their eggs. If you choose to you can easily scrape the eggs off the glass to prevent overpopulation. This allows you to be in even more control of the population of your snails. Other snails are live bearers and controlling the offspring coming from them would require the purchase of Assassin Snails or a Clown Loach.

Could also Just get nerite snails. They can't reproduce in freshwater. If you are worried about overpopulation.

So even if I had one snail and I overfed it it could reproduce by itself? That is assuming it isn't already carrying baby snails
