Thinking about framing in a spot in the middle of the stand to hold the electric fireplace from the cabinet in the pic. Opinions welcomed.

How hot does the exterior of the heater get, and I assume it doesn't vent?

The little thing puts out some heat. I don't remember the btu rating. The only output is at the top of the face. The top of the blower is vented to allow air to come in.
Output and blower vent

I don't think it would receive enough air flow being confined in a stand against the wall, I'd be a little nervous myself. What the heck do you need a heater for in Louisiana? Come up here to Chicago and I'll show you cold!

As far as air flow goes the back of the stand will be open and the casing around the heater will also be open. My fear would be the heat rising up to the tank and heating the water.
My man cave/fish room has no central heat or ac so although its hot as heck down here for 9 months out of the year, the 3 months when it's cold, it gets real cold. Nowhere near Chicago's cold but pretty cold.

I wouldn't do it only because then it can only go with the fireplace. I'm not a fan of comstumizing things too much, sometimes it works against you in the long run. Also, what if it does mess wit the temp? You might be risking some temperature spikes that could harm the fish.

What is the stocking plan. I have a 65g South American tank.

Less is more in this case. I wouldn't want anything taking attention from my tank, I want that to be the center piece for all eyes to see.

Night #2

I went with the fireplace. It won't be on for long enough intervals to really effect water temps so I think I'll be alright.

3x wc Geophagus altifrons Sao Felix
2x wc geophagus winemilleri
3x red head tapajos
2x sultan pleco
15x giant danios

I'd do buenos aires over the GDs, or two spot astyanax. Something a little more natural to the home range of most geos :) just my two cents.

Looks great man! Can't wait to see it! Could definitely use a few keyhole cichlids though ;) hahaha

I considered buenes aires and the two spots would also be a great choice. Who knows they may both make an appearance. Thanks bro.

I vote for Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis, you have enough red in the tank with all the geos. I think this would be a better contrast in a large school, plus can't beat the red eyes!
